Olá, minha gente! Tempos estranhos esses, não? Tá ficando bem divertido fazer essas recomendações, porque me encoraja a ir atrás de mais informações sobre os artistas que me chamam atenção no feed e ir descobrir novos criativos – e todos eles vão virando meus queridinhos. Tava procurando um tema pra ligar os escolhidos de hoje e acho que todos eles tem um tratamento de cores muito especial, assim como estilos bastante característicos e consistentes. Pra mim, que mesmo depois da faculdade de História da Arte ainda sei bem pouco sobre arte digital, esses artistas vem me mostrando um universo de possibilidades dentro desse meio.

Hi, all! What a strange time to be alive, isn't it? It has become quite interesting to put together these posts, because it pushes me not only to seek information about artists that catch my eye on my feed, but also to find new creatives – all of which have become personal favourites. I have been searching for a common thread that links the artists of today and I think they share a very special treatment of colours, as well as very distinctive and consistent (yet still versatile) styles. Even after graduating a History of Art degree, I still know very little about digital art, and these artist have been showing me the range of possibilities and different aesthetics within this medium.

1. Bárbara Malagoli @bmalagoli Bárbara é metade brasileira, metade italiana e, no momento, reside em Londres. O portifólio da artista é belíssimo e bastante variado, indo de ilustrações pro The New York Times e outros artigos online, até posters para grupos musicais, marcas, campanhas... O site entra em detalhe sobre cada um dos projetos e seus processos criativos, recomendo dar uma olhada! As três primeiras ilustrações que escolhi pra esse post são parte de um projeto chamado Flutuantes, em colaboração com a editora paulista Babel Books. A série de 12 posters retrata mulheres de forma fluída e vibrante, como figuras que “flutuam no ar como bolhas de sabão” (parafraseando a descrição do site). Inclui também um desenho para um artigo do site Eater e um poster para a revista brasileira Vida Simples, sobre as coincidências e sincronismos que levam a finais felizes – num momento como o atual, achei que pudesse servir de acalento.

Barbara is half Brazilian, half-Italian and is currently based in London. Her portfolio is beautiful and incredibly diverse, ranging from illustrations for the New York Times and other online articles to posters for bands, brands and campaigns. Her website goes into further detail about the creative process behind each project – I highly recommend having a look. The first three illustration I chose for this post are part of a project called ‘Flutuantes’ (loosely translates into ‘that which floats’), a collaboration with the publisher Babel Books. The series of 12 posters depicts women in a fluid yet vibrant form, as figures that “hover in the air like soap bubbles made of sugar”. I have included another illustration for an article on Eater, as well as a poster for the Brazilian magazine Vida Simples, about the coincidences and synchronisms that lead to happy endings – in times like these I thought it might be a comforting thought.

2. George Greaves & Raphael Greaves @georgegreaves & @raffy_greaves Um combo dessa vez porque os artistas são gêmeos parceiros de criação! George e Raphael co-fundaram a loja inglesa Printed Goods, como “um projeto colaborativo com a crença de que a art epode e deve enriquecer experiências diárias”. A marca estampa seus designs em posters, camisetas, acessórios E tapeçarias (minhas prediletas, são um trabalho de artesanato incrível que por mim podiam cobrir minha casa do chão ao teto). No site, os artistas se dizem influenciados pela mitologia clássica, pelo simbolismo e por arquétipos, que usam pra criar peças contemporâneas que ecoam o passado. De fato, referência à antiguidade Greco-romana é clara, tanto nas figuras como nas formas arquitetônicas da maioria dos designs, mas atualizada pela linguagem modernista de um design bastante gráfico. Eu notei também uns ecos de surrealismo em cenas que também parecem fantasias, um paralelo com xilogravura no sombreado em figuras humanas e o tratamento das escadarias me lembrou obras de Escher – isso pode ser projeção minha. De qualquer forma, os designers são muito habilidosos na maneira como sobrepõem estéticas diferentes e dão a elas um tratamento original.

This time we have a combo because the artists are twins that partner in their creations. George and Raphael co-founded the Bristol-based shop Printed Goods as a “collaborative project with the belief that art can and should enrich daily experiences”. The brand prints their designs in posters, t-shirts, accessories AND tapestries (my favourites, they’re an intricate work of craftsmanship that I wish could cover all surfaces in my home). On their website, the artists discuss the influences of classic mythology, symbolism and archetypes as inspirations to create contemporary pieces that echo the past. Indeed, the reference to Greco-roman antiquity is evident, both in figures and in the architectural forms present in most designs, but it is updated by modernist language and a bold graphic design. I also noted echoes of surrealism in some fantasy-like scenes, parallels with woodcuts in the shadowing of human figures and the stairs remind me of Escher’s works – but this might just be my reading of it. Anyway, the designers are both very skilled in the way they combine different aesthetic references and give them an original spin.

3. Victoria Sieczka

Victoria é uma designer e ilustradora do Canadá, especializada em ilustração digital e pintura em murais. Ela lista quadrinhos, moda e música como suas principais inspirações de design. Suas criações costumam ser repletas de cores vibrantes e contrastes, que pra mim evocam estéticas retrô, principalmente anos 80. Um destaque das criações dela pra mim é um tratamento das superfícies que parecem texturizadas – talvez isso tenha relação com a prática de pintar em murais? Só sei que podia passar horas olhando o portifólio da artista online – que inclui posters de festivais e capas de álbum que refletem mesmo um diálogo criativo com a música.

Victoria is a Canada-based designer and illustrator, specialised in mural painting and digital illustration. She names graphic novels, fashion and music as her main design inpirations. Her creations are usually bold and bright, which to me evokes a retro aesthetic, especially some 80s imagery. A highlight of her creations to me is a treatment of surfaces that makes them look textured – maybe this relates to her mural painting practice? All I know is I could spend hours looking at her portfolio – which includes festival posters and álbum covers that reflect her creative dialogue with music.

4. Senegambia (por @luangdacach) @senegambia81 Esse artista brasileiro faz colagens digitais em torno do tema da religiosidade Afro-Brasileira. Usando símbolos e alegorias dos orixás sobrepostos com fotografias de elementos e figuras da cultura popular (vide o exemplo abaixo com a foto da Luedji Luna), os designs de Luan evocam significados mitológicos numa linguagem que conversa com a modernidade e com o espaço da internet. Pra mim, é um lembrete de como a religiosidade e a fé se mantém presentes na modernidade através de símbolos que, mesmo atualizados, mantém a ligação com o sagrado. Lindo e inspirado trabalho!

This Brazilian artist produces digital collages around the theme of Afro-Brazilian religiosity. Overlapping symbols and allegories belonging to deities (called orixás) with photographs of elements and figures from popular culture (see the example below with a picture of the singer Luedji Luna), Luan’s designs evoke mythological meanings in a language that dialogues with modernity and the space of the internet. To me, it is a reminder of how religiosity and faith stay updated within modernity through symbols that, while updated, maintain a connection with that which is sacred. Beautifully inspired work!

5. Very Real Fantasy (by @justin.psd) @veryrealfantasy

Numa estética de manual para donas de casa dos anos 50, esse artista produz sátiras da expectativa que essa aparência sugere com temáticas atuais. Ele sobrepõe a estética de aparente harmonia com textos e elementos desconcertantes de forma subversiva, abordando temas como ansiedade, auto-sabotagem, bagagem emocional e outros ‘demônios’ que se disfarçam de normalidade. E pra quem gosta de astrologia, o artista tem pelo menos três séries sobre signos e suas personalidades.

Drawing on manuals for perfect housewives from the 50s, this artist produces satires of the expectation of this appearance suggests with current themes. He contrasts the aesthetic of normality with disruptive texts and elements in a subversive way, introducing themes such as anxiety, self-sabotage, emotional baggage and other ‘demons’ that hide behind the appearance of normality. For those who like astrology, the artist also has at least three clever series on star signs and their personality traits.
